I’m sitting in a little Venetian café, sipping at my coffee, and writing a little as I watch people drift by on their hired gondolas. The cobbled streets are also full of passers-by, winding their way through the city on foot. As a traveler (not the same as a tourist), I love to study a city through its people. I have found Venice captivating in this regard.
The waiter returns with a fresh cup, and I smile my thanks; grazie. Between the tourists, the travelers like myself, and the regulars who frequent this small café, it’s nearly full. A woman is reading to my left, an older man behind me contemplates the passers-by, and I’m jotting down notes from my day.
The violinist further down the sidewalk plays romantic, easily recognizable songs (the kind that tourists tip for). At the moment, we’re serenaded by O Sole Mio. I smile and take another sip of my coffee.
